When children grow up into young teens and young adults it's often time to start considering upgrading the furniture in their bedroom as that small twin size bed just isn't providing a comfortable nights' sleep anymore. Maybe when they five or six years old the bed worked great giving them their own space and was a great move up from the toddler bed they may have had as young child. Now is the time though to make that next move and it isn't always immediately clear what bed options exist for the young teen or young adult ready for adult furniture. In this article we'll explore bed options and what's available for people ready for the step up to adult furniture.

Of course we all are probably aware of twin size beds. These measure 39" x 75" and offer great size for smaller rooms or for smaller individuals. Twin size beds are available bunked (twin over twin), as day beds with a trundle beneath them providing additional sleeping space and of course standard twin beds. Did you know though that twin size beds are also available in extra long bed sizes? Oh yes. You can get a twin extra long bed which measures 39" x 80" which is the same length as a queen or king size bed. Still perfect for the small room but great for the teen or adult who needs more length in a bed. So keep twin extra long beds or twin xl beds in mind when shopping for a new bed.

Next up are full size beds. These beds measure 54" x 75" and are still a great size for smaller bed rooms. A little wider than a twin bed, but the same length. However, if a full size bed isn't cutting it either then it's time to consider a full extra long bed. Full extra long bed you say? Yes, another wonderful idea in xl beds. Full extra long beds measure 54" x 80" and will also give you that queen or king size bed length but keeps the smaller width of a full size bed. If you don't want a twin bed but aren't quite able to handle a queen bed in the space then full xl beds may be the choice for you!

Of course if you've got the space, the number one selling bed size in North America is the queen size bed. These measure 60" x 80" and can easily sleep two people. Most couples in North America own a queen size bed in their home and seems to be the size of choice in standard and master bedrooms. If you can fit this bed into the space you'll probably find an immediate liking to this size if you've been using a twin size bed. Talk about an upgrade! If you can fit it into the space and have enough room to maneuver this mattress into where it's going then a queen may be for you if you don't find a twin or full size bed very appealing.

King size is the final size of mattress available. King mattresses are offered standard 76" x 80". Almost a perfect box dimensionally. King beds are the ultimate in mattresses and are the largest mattresses out there. You'll need a pretty good sized room to fit one of these mattresses which are the second most sold size in North America right behind queen size mattresses. Of course every king wants to be different and why not? That's why California King size mattresses are also available. California what you say? California king or Cal king as they are also referred to are specialty mattresses that measure 72" x 85". The longest size still considered standard in the bedding industry. Why would someone want a mattress that measures over 7 feet long? Believe it or not there are many folks out there that measure 6' 8" or taller who have a rough time on queen and king mattresses. Cal king beds seem to be the ticket and offer better comfort and support for taller people than standard queen and king beds. Definitely, a great addition to the bedding industry.

Well, I hope you found this article helpful in trying to get a handle on what size bed you want for your teen, young adult or maybe even you. Remember that besides standard twin and full beds are also extra long bed sizes in those beds. Instead of being 75" long those beds will be 80" giving you more length in a bed but keeping the same smaller width for small rooms. Queen beds are the most popular size in North American. These beds are followed closely by king size beds, which are available standard or in a California king size. Now when you're out shopping you'll be armed with the knowledge of what size bed you want and will help to speed up the process of finding the bed that's right for you and your family.
